Geachte heer Maarten Millaart,

Dear Friend,
I understand that St Nicolaas has disappeared. Is this true. That would be a
great pity. Santa KLaus is an American version and is purely commercial. I have
many memories of the 5th December when I was a child. I wish all readers a Happy
New Year and hope to enjoy the old fashioned Frisian " Oliebolle" The recipe I
have is more than 100 years old and came from my Grandmother, who died in 1934
when I was 5 years old. Best wishes from Wiebe Wybenga

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. This is a great site, please keep
up the good work. One of my favourite memories of Christmas is the congregation
of Emmanuel Reformed Church of Woodstock singing 'Ere Zigh God' (please forgive
me if i have misspelled it!) I don't suppose anyone has a version of this hymn i
could download?
I appreciate any answer

Beste Frieslanders,

Mag zoiets in
jullie gastenboek staan of weten jullie daar een betere plek voor?
Met dank voor de aandacht en moeite,
Helmich de Vries (jaargang 1940)

Thank you so much for this wonderful website. I had the amazing opportunity to
study for 5 months in Leeuwarden this past spring. I was absolutely taken away.
It was the best time that I have had in a long while. Friesland is so
beautiful. I had the luck to visit several places in Friesland, although I did
like Leeuwarden the best. Herenveen was also very nice. I am glad that I got
to live in this unique place in Holland. The Frisians are definitely different
from the rest of the Dutch. They are an amazing people. As soon as I am done
with school I will be moving back to Leeuwarden to live with a friend and study
more Dutch. Thanks for this website. It makes me feel like I am at "home" again.
I can't wait to go back. I absolutely fell in love.

Hi, my married name is Foggin, from Northumberland in England, although I live
in Australia. I have been told that Foggin/Foggon/Foggen/Foggan is a corruption
of the Frisian word "fokken". Can anyone tell me if this is so and what is the
meaning of the word?
Foggins appeared in Nbl in the mid 1600's. Why would they have migrated then?
Hope someone can help solve these puzzles.

Hi there. I am looking for a family that lived at Statenweg 50D Rotterdam,
Holland. My dad was a WW2 serviceman who passed away two years ago. Just
recently we found a wonderful letter in his things, written to Dad by a
D.A.Boltjes (or perhaps James Diett Boltjes). From what we can understand from
the letter this gentleman had a wife and two children ( Irene and Johnny, or
little Johnny) It sounds as if Dad had spent some time with this family during
the war years. The letter was dated Dec.22/46. If anyone has any knowledge of
this family I would really appreciate a reply. I am sure that my dad and your
family would smile to see us make contact. I look forward to any and all
replies. thank you, Jerry Elmer Binkley, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Hi.
My grandfather came from Fryslan in the 1920s-1930s. His name was Jelle Wiegar
Boltje. He changed our surname to Boltja in America. I have been told a few
meanings of the name Boltje: little bull, little loaf of bread and little hill.
The Boltje family originated in Sneek but migrated to Hereenveen (spelling?). I
believe at one time they owned a dredging company and actually dredged the
beaches for the Coppa Cabana in South America. Apparently, the Boltjes that
went to South America squandered the money there and did not come back to The
Netherlands. I have also been told that the Boltje dredging company was kind of
swindle out of a big dredging deal by the Dutch government. Supposedly, there
was a big dredging job to be done and the Dutch government promised the deal to
the Boltje dredging company. Two other dredging companies merged thus cheating
the Boltje company out of the government job that was already promised to them.
This action put the Boltje company out of business. I have been to The
Netherlands and to Fryslan...I went to Sneek and Hereenveen in 1998. I actually
went to the house my cousin lived when she lived over there. An old lady who
lived across the lane remembered my cousin from years and years ago. This old
lady had to be like 90 years old and her mind was as quick as a whip. My
cousin, Trijntje Zichtema Smink, passed away in 2002 (Los Angeles) and her
brother, Al, lived in Zwyndrecht and passed away in late 2002. They had a
little sister, Hilda, who died during the German occupation at 5 years old from
pneumonia. Trine, as we called her, Al and Hilda's mother was a Boltje. Trine
told me we are not related to Boltjes only to Boltje. There are many Boltjes in
the north midwest in the United States. I did find one Boltje in Florida that
is a third cousin. There are quite a few Boltje in The Netherlands. I also was
informed by a history professor that there is a small clan of Friesians in New
Jersey but they tend to stay to themselves are clannish. This history professor
told me the Friesians were pirates despite my aunt insists they were Vikings. I
prefer the pirate idea better. My brother told me, in Vermont that there are a
bunch of Fresians/Dutch near Lake Champlain because the country side reminds
them of Fryslan. I was told by Trine that the Friesian language is not a dialect
of Dutch, however I read in some places that it is. I tend to believe that
Friesian is not a dialect of Dutch. I read English comes from Old English that
comes from Friesian that comes from Old Friesian. Trine, also, told me that at
the national games The Friesian and Dutch Flags are flown and the Friesian
National and Dutch National Anthems are played because it was the Friesians that
rose against the Spanish and French because of their taxation. This rebellion
expelled these foreign countries out of The Netherlands. I know their are some
Dutch called black Dutch because of their Spanish blood just like the black
Irish. I would appreciate any feedback to my note especially if it is enlighten
me.

To Whom It May Concern,
My Grandmother Eva Kemmerling was born on a farm in Kempton, Pa. (USA). I loved
to hear the stories that she would tell me about her childhood and was amazed
that she did not learn to speak English until she was 15 years old. I asked her
why? Her answer was, "Didn't have to no one else spoke English either." She told
me that her parents immigrated from some place near Holland and they spoke
"Black Dutch". I mentioned this to some of my German friends and they all agreed
that my great grandparents must have come from Friesland. Would you be kind
enough to let me know if " Kemmerling " is a name fom that region. My daughter
and I spent several hours in the Amsterdam airport last September and I asked
afew people if that was a name familiar name in Holland and they all said no.

I am very interested to meet some Frisians and to find out more about my

Dear all,
I would like to share this interesting article with you. It was written by my
friend Albert van der Heide publisher of the Windmill Herald. I was born in De
Harkema and so were my mother, brothers and sisters . Albert writes about the
van der Veen family. I believe that Sjoukje Land was related to my mother
Jacoba Land. My grandparents were Klaas Land and Jitske Land -Veenstra. Please

Subject: Is Schrein a Frisian name?
I would be grateful for any information leading to the discovery of a family,
past or present, somewhere in Schleswig-Holstein called SCHREIN, or, less
likely, SCREEN, SKRINE or SKREYN. I have generally assumed the name to be
German, but other members believe it is Danish. Comments on the name and/or its
likely origin, possible area of concentration in Schleswig Holstein, location of
living or deceased family members would be highly valued.
My maternal great-grandmother, Anette, came to London, England about 1830,
reportedly "working on the boats." Possibly these were the boats/ships operating
between a port or ports in Schleswig-Holstein, and English ports including
London.
She was born around 1812-1818, and married Thomas Moore (More) in Islington,
London in 1832. They had several children, among whom were Mary Ann (1834),
Eliza (1836), Margaret (1839), Thomas (1840), Wiilliam (1842), Charles (1846)
and George, my grandfather (1849).
Please reply in German, English or Danish.
Gratefully,
W.D.Jones

That's quite a story and wouldn't it be nice if you could find the answer for
your mom. In the spirit of your request for help, even though I have no direct
knowledge, I offer the following: How was her father listed on her birth
certificate since the adoptive father did not appear for 8 years? Birth
certificates are issued by the city of birth in the netherlands. My experience
with records is that the state needs a father listed despite the social
circumstances. The church registration may also still exist.
Since it's unlikely that the biologic father's descendants were ever told the
story I can't imagine a eureka! moment from one of them who just happens to read
your posting. Better, I think, to enlist the help of someone who lives there who
would search real records for you.
Have you considered posting on a Dutch-Frisian genealogy website such as
Tresoar? I have made some excellent contacts of people there who have been
willing to access resources for us Dutch Canadians.
http://www.tresoar.nl/ select contact, then forum, then genealogy forum.
I would guess that your request would inspire lots of interest, just like in me.
Good Luck, please post here on DRF if you get any good results!

Hi: In Canada they call me Effie Lattanzio but really I’m Aafke Jantina
Heslinga. My mother and father were Jacop and Saakje Heslinga (Eidema (DeJong))
from Arum Friesland (Fryslan). We emigrated from Noordwyk an Zee in 1953 on the
Waterman ship . My parents had moved to North Holland from Friesland 6 years
previous. I still have much family in Fryslan, many of whom I have gotten to
know in my three visits to the province. Mother Saakje is still alive at 89
years of age wishes to find out about her biological father as her mother Saakje
DeJong was not allowed to marry him. He was Catholic and she was Gereformeert.
He was also from a higher socio economic class. When mother’s mom married 8
years later to Sjerp Eidema mom was adopted by her stepfather. We have reason
to believe that her real father’s last name was Adema. If this story rings a
bell with anyone from the Franeker area I would really appreciate hearing from
you. My e-mail address is elattanzio@st-thomas.on.ca or
illo@st-thomas.library.on.ca Any information would be welcome. I saw a message
in the 1997 guestbook from Mark Heslinga in Iowa. We have family in Ooskaloosa,
decendants of Auke (Andrew ) Heslinga my grandfather’s brother who I had the
pleasure to meet when I was 16 and we went to find him. I live in St. Thomas,
Ontario Canada N5R 6K6. My phone # is 519-631-5204. This website is fantastic.
I cannot get enough of it Hope to hear a response from someone Aafke.

As you can guess it is believed to have been started by the Friesians in 430

It is believed to be the most Northern settlement of the Friesians. Is this
true ?
Can anyone tell me also if there are any official links between my town and
Friesland?
Look Forward to hearing from you.

In case you haven't received the answer on the words on your Delft blue plate
here is the answer.
A person must bloom where God has planted Him. (The word siedde means sown)
Since the inscription is in Frisian are you certain that the plate is a Delft
blue plate. It could be it is a Makkum plate since they are made in Friesland
and are very expensive.

the alternate spellings, coat of arms, etc. I am interested in making a trip to

Thank you for providing me with some vital information about my fathers
homeland. My father died when he was just 21 and had been born in Friesland. I
grew up with limited knowledge about my family even though I keep in contact
with some of them they don't really remember much about their homeland as they
too were quite young when they immigrated to Canada.
My father's name was Jan Gjaltema and he was born in September 1946.
Any help would be grealy appreciated!

Hello,
I am interested in finding out about my ancestors in Friesland.
My name is Thomas Jousma and I am a third generation Dutch American on my
father's side. My great grandfather Peter Jousma (wife - Winifred) immigrated
to the US in 1891. Peter was born in 1862 and Winifred in 1864. They had a
son Charles who was three at the time. My grandfather Rex was born in the US.
I would like to visit Holland next year and possibly meet with relatives or
anyone who has information about the Jousmas or Jouwsmas.
Thanks so much for a great site!

Hello,
I wanted to send my thanks for your wonderful site. I remember as a small child
my grandfather telling me that our ancestry was based in a place called
Friesland. My last name is deFreese. Unfortunately my grandfather died many
years ago from Alzheimer's and I was never able to get any of the details from
him. Most of the family I'm still in contact with doesn't know much about our
heritage, so unfortunately I don't have a lot to go on. I will try to plan a
trip to visit and will definately be looking into learning the Frisian language.
I would love any information you would be willing to send me, however I am very
happy for the information on your website.
Thanks,

Hello from Texas, USA...My name is Linda M. Adams, my great grandfather was
Ralph A. Dykstra who travelled on the SS Pollux from Amsterdam on May 23, 1881
to New York. As all my descendents are now on the other side, I have had little
or no information as to the beginnings of my heritage.. My youngest daughter
recently visited your country in search of her heritage and was delighted to
find such wonderful people there. She said it was like meeting herself on the
street. She brought back a beautiful pair of klompens for me, that I proudly
display in my home.. Hopefully I will have an opportunity to visit Holland as
well.

recieved the name of Vanderkolk from Napoleon in the Vrouwen Parochie area of

Netherlands? His name would have been Michael Peters (de Groot).

Wow, the pictures are great. Am trying to find information on my ancestors who
were born in Balk, Freisland, Netherland. His name was Kornelius A Mulder born
March 3,1845. He married Emma, don't know her maiden name, they had a son named
Adolph K Mulder born November 14,1879. They migrated around 1880's. When my
grandfather and grandmother visited Balk, they found some of our ancestors, I
don't know the name of the church that they went to but I remember a name. Her
name was Imjka DeWilder (spelling probably wrong) buried on the church grounds.
If anybody could help me find out any information I would greatfully appeciate
it.

Hi! I'm an American from Minnesota who found your websight in searching for
information and pictures of the frozen canals and ice skating in Holland. I am
enjoying the pictures very much! After buying an old copy of Hans Brinker and
the Silver Skates and starting to read it, I became interested in the
Netherlands, and especially in ice skating on the frozen canals. Since we do a
lot of ice skating here in Minnesota, and I grew up living on a lake where I
could put on my skates in my back yard and skate across the lake to school, I
found many similarities to winter time in Holland and my childhood winters in
Minnesota! Thank you for all the wonderful pictures! It truly looks like a
wonderful place to live, and skate!
