Dear Maarten:
Your continued involvement with the Gastenboek is deeply appreciated.
I hope your Christmas was very merry--- Have a wonderful New Year!
During the past year, I was contacted by a very distant relative---previously
unknown---living here in the United States, who had seen some of my previous
posts in the Gastenboek. She graciously shared a good deal of information,
helped fill in several blanks in our family history, and also led me to
prospects of more discoveries. It was a fascinating encounter made possible only
through this vital web site.
Thanks so much for your continued efforts in making all this
possible.

Greetings, I found this site while looking up information about my heritage.
My mother's grandparents were from Friesland and migrated to Paterson, New
Jersey, USA in the early 20th century. They were hard-working Christian
Reformists who settled into their new environment with ease. My mother
whose maiden name is Faasse has limited information on her grandparents but
would like to start researching into more depth. Are there any sites that
you or someone might know about that could help us on our journey?
This site and all of the pictures are very beautiful. I would love to visit
some day. Thank you,
Chad G. Matthews

Dag Maarten,
Mooie informatieve web-site.
bestaat?
Dank je wel voor je antwoord,

I am searching for family history of my greatgrandfather Pieter Ploegsma
reportly born in Friesland 25 December 1856 who immigrated by himself to
Chicago, Illinios about 1872 at about the age of 15.
In 1876 he married Grietje Wieringa, age 20, in the True Dutch Reformed Church
(Chicago) who had also immigrated with her family to Chicago from Friesland.
About 1877 they had their first child named Keemple Ploegsma who died at age 4,
of Scharlet Fever in August 1881, five months after my grandfather named Harm
Jon Ploegsma (known as Harry) was born.
I cannot find any records of Pieter's arrival, parents or siblings names, town
of birth, ship traveled on, point of departure or anything else to help piece
together a family tree back to Holland.
Any hints in locating this information would be greatly appreciated.

Maarten Millaard:
Thanks, Maarten, for your continued service on behalf of
Frysians around the world!
My inquiring posts in the Gastenboek during the fall and winter of 2002 paid off
just the other day when I received a reply from one Liz Chasolen, who spotted
my messages and was kind enough to provide a lot of fascinating family history
that also identified a number of Hoitsmas--I am very pleased, and will be
corresponding with her at some length in order to learn more about those of a
distant past.
The lesson I draw from this exchange is the importance of patience in
anticipation of a reply to any inquiry, and the necessity of checking the
Gastenboek for replies and additional contacts.
Thanks again,

there was a place where we could research the registrants of the

he may have raced in the years 1933, 1940, 1941, 1942 and maybe 1947.
Where can I find information on this ?

Greetings from Knoxville, Tennessee, U.S.A.!
My name is Katherine Botma, and I happened upon this site while looking for
information for my son on the Netherlands. I was happy to find such an
informative site. My father, Anne Botrma, is from Engwierum and all of my
relatives on his side still reside in that area. He came to the U.S. in his
early twenties and settled in Maine.
I have found that not much is known about the Netherland here in the U.S., and I
have always been happy to tell people what I know about it. A friend of mine,
who teaches 7th grade reading, told her students about Holland, the country and
that the people called themselves Dutch. I told her it was called the
Netherlands and not all of the people called themselves Dutch; my father called
himself Friesian (he now considers himself American), and he spoke the Friesian
language. She had never heard of Friesland. I asked her where she thought
Fresian Holsteins came from then had to tell her they were the black and white
cows.
She showed me information from a dictionary and an encyclopedia that called the
people Dutch and the country Holland. I told her my father would beg to differ;
he would never have called himself Dutch in a million years. She later attended a
conference on the history of english and found that friesian is one of the
languages english is based on!
You see there is much for people to learn!
My father, by the way, is a dairy farmer and has a Friesian Holstein herd.

Dear Maarten - Hello! I just recently
discovered your wonderful website, and thought maybe someone there could help
me find out some information about my grandfather and his family, who were
from Freisland. His father (my great-grandfather) was named Joende te
Mooke, and my great-grandmother's name was Gertrude te Mooke. Their son
(my grandfather) was named Lambert. I've checked the Ellis Island records
here, and found out that Joende and Lambert arrived in New York City, on board a
ship called the Statendam, on June 12, 1903. (Gertrude died enroute,
sadly). It had sailed from Rotterdam. The family here thinks
that they came from a town called Entsehelle, or possibly from Veldhuisen, which
I understand is now in Utrecht. They were farmers there. We also
understand that Joende had a brother (name unknown) who stayed in the
Netherlands with his wife and children. They corresponded with my
grandfather until about 1942-43, and then the letters suddenly stopped.
We've been looking for them ever since - or at least for news of what may have
happened to them. I'm sure World War 2 probably had something to do
with their sudden disappearance. I would appreciate any information or
help you can give me. My e-mail address is paulinerichter@comcast.net.

My Great Great Grandfather Johannes Wystes Hoekstra was Dominie at the Martini

Frisian...since I had never SEEN written words ..simply spoke it as a child.
I may have the generations mixed up but I believe his father the "oude dokter"
in Wommels was the father in law of dr. Lutzen Wagenaar. Ohm Lutzen married
Catherine Hoekstra. Another relative wrote a book about the War between Spain

If anyone knows where I can do more research I would appreciate being told about
