Hello,
I am doing research on my Freisland heritage,
specifically trying to find information on my great grandfather Dirk Hooyenga
born March 5, 1860 in Doesum area? My great grandmother Ynskje (Anna)
Uilkema born feb 14, 1863 in Trnsum area? They were married in Freisland, May
1887. I have two letters one dated 1959 and one dated 1960 from from an Ate
Paulus Hooyenga born 1916 and believed to still be living or have family in
Freisland area. The letter I think is posted from Leeuwarden,
Yansteenstraat (Jansteenstraat) 35, the writing is hard to read. I
believe Ate Paulus Hooyenga has a son Ate who was born in 1948. I'm not
sure how Ate Paulus Hooyenga fits in the family tree. Can anyone help
out! Is the address above correct and in Leeuwarden and is it spelled
correctly? Thanks for the help

grandson of Dirk Hooyenga

Dear Maarten,
Thanks for a incredible site and for allowing me to read all the mails from so
many descendants across the world. It is strange how one nation can actually
have so much impact on the rest of the world and shows how we as families can
stretch all over the world. It is awesome.
I am wondering and am intrigued and have been wanting to find out where I come
from and where my roots are since childhood. I searched up the internet and
found a couple of sites on my surname and discovered that with the time of
Napoleon, our forefathers had to get surnames for themselves and in turn chose
to have the surnames that represented the areas they lived in. My surname is de
Vries, so I believe that it did originate from Friesland a few hundred years
ago. Is there any way that I could possibly find out and could you possibly
give me any assistance or if there is any out there that has some form of idea,
please could you let me know? All I know is, that the first group of
deVries'ses came in to SOUTH AFRICA around the years 1700s but am not 100% sure,
because I do not have all the facts yet and then there was more of my family
name who went to the States at a certain time as well. My name is Ignatius
Christiaan de Vries and as far as I know am the 3rd or 4th generation carrying
my two first names with de Vries as the surname.
On another note, when is the next time you all will be having a big get
together?? I am interested to maybe be there the next time it happens.
Hope to hear from someone.
Cheers

Hello. My name is William Eckhof. My family name originally was Eekhof
but when my father came to America, the Americans mispronounced his
family name with a "long e," like eeeeeekhof, so he made a phonetic
change but it still didn't come out right. I really wish he had not
changed it. I have visited Friesland several times, have relatives in
the area of Bolsward, and love the country. My father's home was
Parrega. He came to the U.S. about 1908, served with the U.S. Army in
World War 1, and opened a bakery in Utica, New York in 1923. The bakery
was very successful. He retired very happily in 1945 and died in 1955.
I am his only child. I am a writer and editor and live near Washington,
DC. I hope someone will contact me because I would like to write to my
fellow-countrymen in your beautiful province.

Many thanks to you for having established this wonderful site for visitors from
around the world, particularly for those of us with familial roots in Friesland.
The site has been an eye-opener for this distant correspondent who remains
fascinated and intrigued by the prospects of discovery.
A 1998 Guestbook posting by Ernest Joel Hoitsma---uncovered just yesterday---
triggered some vivid memories of the Hoitsma family's USA origins in Virginia
and later settlements in upstate New York and then in northern New Jersey.
I'm hoping there are some other Hoitsmas, here and abroad, who might take a
moment to respond, prompted by the same locales and names EJH's post brought to
this reader's mind. Sibron, a great-great grandfather, who was among the first
on these shores sometime around the 1860s, Richard, a grandfather, and father,
Peter, who died in 1976 at age 87---the latter both longtime residents in the
northern New Jersey area who left numerous children and grandchildren.
The names in EJH's 1998 post---still available, thanks to you, Maarten---may be
familiar to other Hoitsmas, here and elsewhere in the world. If so, please take
a moment or two to "say" hello and perhaps share a few memories of your roots as
well.
I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Albert Rolfs Loschen, born in 1840. He came to Western Illinois, Adams County
in May 1866 on the ship Hermann. I've been in contact with St Johannes Ev.
Lutheran church in Wiesens and they didn't haven't anything in their church
records. I know that he came from that area however. Maybe someone has another

I am looking for information on a William Dijkstra who is believed to
have been born in Friesland about 1841 and died in Grand Rapids,
Michigan on 4 March 1935. He married a Minke Vander Weide who was
born about 1852 and died in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 17 June 1930. I
found an immigration record in Dutch Immigrants in the U.S. which
indicated that they may have immigrated from Rotterdam aboard the ship
MAAS arriving in New York on 20 April 1874. William was listed as 32
years old and Minke as 21. Their marriage must have been only 1-2 years
before they immigrated. I am interested in their birth dates, marriage
date and any known relatives.
Thank you for your help.

DEAR CANADA
O CANADA, WE CAN'T FORGET
THE BITTER TEARS THAT YOU HAVE SHED
YOU FOUGHT FOR US SO WILLINGLY
TO SET OUR LITTLE HOLLAND FREE
SOME CAME BY BOAT, OTHERS BY PLANE
SO MANY NEVER RETURNED AGAIN
WE SAW THEM COMING ONE BY ONE
A FATHER, BROTHER OR A SON
NO ONE COULD EVER PUT IN WRITING
THE STRENGTH OF THESE CANADIANS FIGHTING
57 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN FREE
THANK YOU CANADA FOR LIBERTY
O CANADA, WE CAN'T REPAY
THE COST OF DUTCH LIBERATION DAY
YOU CAME AND SAW OUR CRYING LAND
AND WIPED OUR TEARS WITH YOUR OWN HAND
IT WAS FOR THE DUTCH THAT YOUR LOVED ONES DIED
SO MANY CROSSES LEFT BEHIND
ARE ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS AND MIND
WITHOUT THESE CROSSES WE'D HAVE BEEN LOST
STILL DUTCH - CANADIANS COUNT THE COST
TO ALL THE FAMILIES OF THIS NATION
THANK YOU CANADA FOR LIBERATION
O CANADA, DUTCH LIBERATION
BROUGHT GREAT MOURNING TO YOUR NATION
AMONGST OUR FLOWERS YOUR DEAR ONES SLEEP
AND THE DUTCH WILL ALWAYS WEEP
FOR ALL THE RICHES OF THIS EARTH CAN'T PAY
THE COST OF OUR LIBERATION DAY
CANADIAN HEARTS, SO FILLED WITH SORROW
CARED FOR WINDMILL LAND'S TOMORROW
WITH LOVE WERE PLANES SENT INTO THE AIR
DROPPING FOOD AND CLOTHING EVERYWHERE
AND FROM THE HEART, DUTCH - CANADIANS SAY
THANK YOU CANADA FOR LIBERATION DAY
O CANADA, YOU KNOW THEIR NAMES
OF CANADIAN MEN WHO NEVER COMPLAIN
THEY SAW US THROUGH IN FORTY FIVE
RETURNING HOME BEING SCARRED FOR LIFE
THEY FOLLOWED ORDERS TO THE END
SAVED THE DUTCH AND SPARED THEIR LAND
TO THEM ALL HONOUR AND ALL GLORY
THEY ARE THE HEROES OF OUR LIBERATION STORY
CANADIAN LOVE, SO GREAT AND DEEP
THE DUTCH STILL TREASURE AND ALWAYS KEEP
CANADIAN MEN, THE GREATEST IN OUR HISTORY
THANK YOU CANADA FOR LIBERTY
O CANADA, AFTER THE WAR
YOU OPENED WIDE YOUR DOOR
WITH LOVE YOU SENT US AN INVITATION
COME SEE US THROUGH IMMIGRATION
AND WHEN THE DUTCH PUT THEIR FEET ASHORE
YOU WERE WAITING AND CARING ONCE MORE
THE DAYS WENT BY AND LOVE GREW STRONG
FOR WE HAD LEARNED TO SPEAK YOUR TONGUE
TO LIVE WITH THOSE WE'VE LOVED SO MUCH
A DREAM CAME TRUE FOR SO MANY DUTCH
AND WE STILL LIKE TO SAY IN A HUMBLE WAY
THANK YOU CANADA FOR LIBERATION DAY
O CANADA, YOU'LL UNDERSTAND
THE DUTCH-CANADIANS OF YOUR LAND
NOW WE HAVE COME TO LIVE AND STAY
ALL DUTCH -CANADIANS WILL PRAY
LORD BLESS, PROTECT US FURTHERMORE
FROM ANOTHER TERRIBLE WAR
SO MANY DIED AND COULD NOT SEE
OUR GLORIOUS DAY OF LIBERTY
IF EVER DANGER THREATENS THIS LAND
MAY DUTCH SONS BE THE FIRST ON HAND
THROUGH LOVE WE HAVE BECOME ONE NATION
THANK YOU CANADA FOR LIBERATION

This poem of thanks to Canada and Canadians was written by Mrs. Annie Westerhof,
the organist with The Salvation Army, Toronto Temple Corps. in 1970 when the
Dutch were celebrating 25 years of liberation. With the minor change to the
first verse it still hold true the sentiment of love and gratitude felt by the
Dutch towards Canadians for their part in liberating Holland in 1945

Hallo Maarten,
Ik lees met veel interesse de vragen en
mededelingen in jouw gastenboek.

Hello, my name is Don Fonda. I live in Haverhill, Massachusetts,
USA. I am glad you are concerned with Friesland. I am.
My family left Friesland (the town of Agum) sometime between 1640 and
1664). My family ventured across the Atlantic to the New Work (today,
New York State) in about 1654. My ancester from Agum was Jelles
Douwe Fonda (born about 1616), married a Hester - and they had four
children (in Agum): Douwe Jelles Fonda (born about 1641, christened
at Amsterdam 24 November 1641; died 22 November 1700 in Albany, NY);
Geertje Jellis Fonda (born about 1643), christen at Amsterdam
22 September 1632; Sara Jellis Fonda (born about 1645), christened
at Amsterdam 18 Januaary 1646, married Jacobus G Van Vorst,
died 1682 in Schenectady, NY; Abraham Fonda (born abount 1647),
christened in Amsterdam 14 April 1647.
I have been in Agum - briefly. My daughter-in-law saw to it that
we (my wife and I) would go there. My son (Douw Fonda) and
his wife and two children live today in Deil [Gelderland].
I am interested in tracing my family back before Jelle Douwe Fonda.
Can anyone help me? I understand that Fondas were back (before Friesland)
to Piran (modern day Slovenia in 1215) or maybe the Genoa, Italy
area in the 14th/15th century.
Can anyone give me help? I would be so grateful!

One of the books was called: " torda de sigeunerhun" He used to write under
another name, but I have forgotten. Is this book still in circulation?
He was great friends with Fedde Schurer the wellknown writer and
poet.
Many thanks for your help.
Greetings from Wiebe Wybenga

We are insearch of my grandfathers relatives. His
name is Herman Dan Hoeve. He was born on August 4, 1880. His fathers name is
Johann Hoeve and his mother Anna Becker. My grandfather had three brothers and
one sister. We don't know where my grandfather was born at in Holland. The
reason I'm searching here is because I have a old photo of my grandfather and
his sister and her family. On the back of the photo it is stamped with. H.P.E de
la Rosts ROSE and at the bottom of the stamp it says Heerenveen. Part of the top
is rubbed off so I'm not sure on the spelling. If you have ever heard of this
family or the photography company please E-mail me. We are
desperate.
Thank You

Hello!
I am trying to find information or some of my Fries relatives. My
grandparents Willem and Boujke ( I think that is how it is spelled) their
surname, Alberda came here with their 9 children, and I think 2 of the
daughters were married and came with their husbands as well. All of the
family lives in Calgary, Canada. I am searching for any Alberda's in
Friesland that I may be related to. The only other information that I know
is that my grandmother Boujke's maiden name was Van Dyjk.
If you think that you may know someone of relation, or you may be related
yourself please send me an email at rhondahicklin@hotmail.com
