My Grandmother Katherine Dijkstsra emigrated to the USA in 1881 at age
14. She was born in Joure, Friesland on Mar 23, 1867 . I have
recently put my Dykstra ancestry on the internet at http://bixbyrose.com/dykstra. I
was very glad to find your website and would like to put a link on my site
to the history of Friesland. Do you know of any links to Joure?
I plan to more thoroughly study your site as time permits.

Hello there
My mother, Salena Hoff, was born near The Hague in 1916 but earlier
generations from Claes Rienex Hoff, born around 1680, originated from
Friesland, Haulerwijk I think. Some of my ancestors worked on boats
transporting peat from Friesland to Amsterdam.
I am interested to find out more about my Dutch ancestors from Friesland and
would like to find out about any local history libraries or other places
where I might be able to find some records of the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries.
Unfortunately, I do not speak Dutch

I am serching for any info on my ancesters. I know that Peter and Dirk DeJong
came to the U.S. with their family. They married Vanderkolk sisters in

they were born in Friesland, i think in Het Bildt. I know that Dirk changed his
name to Richard Young . They had a brother named Reink. Their maternal

Subject: Informative Web Site!
Dear Maarten:
Thank you for a very informative web site! Since the Friesland
Guestbook graciously invites e-mail questions, I could not bypass the
opportunity.
Having just retired at age 55, I am planning to visit Europe for the
first time in June 2002. Besides spending a day each in Haarlem and
Amsterdam during a six-country tour, I hope to spend a few additional
days checking out the areas from which my grandparents emigrated to the
United States. My maternal grandparents' family (Van Boven) emigrated
from Yerseke in Zeeland in 1920 (all except for my mother who as the
youngest child "was born in America but made in Holland" according to
our in-family joke) so I have leads for that half of my family heritage
from aunts and uncles who have long since passed away.
However, the Pruiksma side of the family does not know much in the way
of particulars. When my great-grandfather's family emigrated in 1895,
my paternal grandfather was only 2 years old at the time, and all of his
siblings were born later in America. Except for the fact that my
great-grandfather, like his brother, was a butcher and meat cutter (a
family vocation dating back to a decree at the time of Napoleon's
conquest of Friesland) and came from Friesland, we don't know much
else. In particular, I don't even know the town/city/area of Friesland
in which they lived before emigrating.
I was thinking of visiting the town hall in Leeuwarden to see if I could
uncover something. Perhaps you or someone affiliated with the web site
could offer other or better suggestions?
Also, the only thing I recall about my paternal grandmother's family
(Van Der Pyle) is that they were said to be "flaak kay", or something
like that phonetically speaking . My investigation has turned up dead
ends so far. I know this is a non-Friesland question, but per chance,
does "flaak kay" ring a bell to you? Might it be a dialect or area of
The Netherlands?
Best Regards

Quite by accident I came upon this site and am truly enjoying
reading all of the messages from people inquiring about ancestral
names. My grandparents immigrated from Friesland in the early 1900s,
and generally took up residence in NW Iowa as well as SW South Dakota. I
was born and raised in NW Iowa in communities that continue to remain 90 - 95 %
Dutch. Many (if not most) of the last names I am seeing on this site are
quite familiar to me, and if fact may even be "shirt-tail" relatives. However,
that doesn't necessarily mean they are direct descendants of the people about
which inquiries are being made. I offer this with the hopes it may help
some people. The following is just a partial list of towns in NW Iowa
that were settled by early Dutch immigrants: Orange City, Alton, Sioux
Center, Boyden, George, Hull, Maurice, Granville, Hospers. I am quite
certain that the town library in Orange City has maintained an extensive
record of those early settlers and may well be of assistance to many of you who
feel relatively confident that their early American roots may have been in
Iowa. Some records indicate that a large percentage of the early Dutch
settlers did take up residence in what is now NW Iowa.
I'm hoping this may be of help to some of you. If
I can be of help in further identifying names for you, I would be glad to do
so. I find this sort of thing interesting and fun ! Happy hunting!!

Notes for ADRIANNA (AUDREY) JEANETTE ZWANENBURG:
My Story by Adrianna Jeanette Zwanenburg Martin
My great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, my sister, Jennie and I
were all born in The Netherlands -- mostly in Friesland, a province of The
Netherlands.
In August, 1920, my Uncle John Harmelink, my Aunt Jeanette and two
cousins, Andrew and Frances, visited us in The Netherlands from Rock Valley,
Iowa. Andrew was 5 years old, Frances 4 years old, my sister Jen, 3-1/2, and I
was 2-1/2. Uncle John offered to sponsor our family for one whole
year.
Uncle John was a farmer and looked as though he could afford to
support our family for a year, but Uncle John had a job waiting for my dad when
we arrived in August, 1921.
We went by train to Rotterdam, then boarded the Steamship "North
Amerika Line" a ten-day voyage. Landed at Hoboken, New Jersey and went through
the Immigration center to be checked for diseases. Finally, took a train to
Iowa. My dad built two big boxes (8'x4'x'4') where our personal belongings were
packed. Some of the items were: two featherbeds, two feather double pillows,
sewing machine, clothes and personal items. Uncle John had us stay at their
house for six weeks. Then asked us to find a house, so dad rented a three-room
house which we lived in for five years while dad worked in a creamery for some
time. But he couldn't tolerate the hot, steamy creamery so he got a job picking
up cream from the farmers.
Then in May, 1927, a bachelor farmer went berserk and they needed a
farmer, so Uncle John mentioned this to my dad. Dad liked the idea and we moved
55 miles northwest from Rock Valley to a farm between Lyons and Colton, South
Dakota.
In 1924, dad went to Sioux City, Iowa and bought a new 1924 Model T.
He arrived home late in the dark. But insisted on giving us a ride. Grandma got
in the car and sat on the floor. We all laughed. The front passenger seat folded
twice and put forward so back seat passengers could get in first. The driver sat
on a cushion on top of the gas tank. Hard to believed, eh?
Getting back to the farm in South Dakota, we were greeted by a collie
dog. Our pet for ten years. This farm house had three bedrooms up, kitchen,
dining and living rooms down. Outdoor outhouse.
Dad took over farm duties. He was experienced by working for farmers
in the old country. Sister and I were 9 and 7 years old.
In the fall, we waited at our driveway for the Model T bus to pick us
up to go to Lyons School. We both were in the 3rd grade. Sister Jen was 4-1/2
years old when we came across, so she was already talking Dutch. I learned
English from her. That's how I caught up to her in the 3rd grade.
In May, 1935, Ma Zwanenburg took a trip to The Netherlands to see her
dad, sister and brother-in-law and nieces and nephews. She saved $250 (from egg
money) and made the round trip. She was gone four months. Us girls were 18 and
16. So we cooked, cleaned and did chores. Glad she was back. In November, we got
word that Grandpa Kuipers had died at age 78.
February 1937, we had to move to another farm because our farm was
sold. Dad rented the Colton farm from Evelyn Scanlon, our landlady. We always
enjoyed visiting her when we went to Sioux Falls, a large city. She would give
us candies, fruits and second-hand clothes from her and her nieces who spent the
summer with her from Ohio. Ma would make the clothes over so they would fit
us.
We moved closer to Sioux Falls. Dad farmed it for one year and sold
cattle, machinery, etc. Then went in the Garage and Filling station in Fairview,
South Dakota with Uncle John. So after four years, they closed up shop. All
three families (The mechanic, wife and son) could not live off the business. So
Grandpa and I invited my parents to come to Michigan in July, 1941. They lived
with us 8 months and rented two different apartments before buying the house at
247 - 44th Street, S.W., Wyoming, Michigan (1943).
Auntie Jen and Uncle Gerrit Prince came to Michigan in August, 1937.
They were married October 5, 1937.
Elmo and I were married February 23, 1938 in Sioux Falls, South
Dakota. After Elmo worked for different farmers and Elmo got me a job as a hired
girl. So at least we were togther in the same place. Elmo won $350.00
(September, 1939) at a theater bank night. So my parents and us decided to come
to Michigan to visit sister Jen and brother-in-law Gerrit and Donald George
(1-1/2 years old).
My folks went back home after a week or so. We stayed on and both got
a job at Keeler Brass in Grand Rapids. We boarded and roomed at different
places. In December, 1940, bought a house at 4508 Jefferson Avenue, S.E., Grand
Rapids. All three sons were born at St. Mary's hospital in Grand
Rapids.
Ma Zwanenburg went to The Netherlands in 1955. Our Martin family took
our vacation in August and met Ma Zwanenburg at Quebec, Canada, where her ship
landed. Then dad, ma and I went to The Netherlands in May 1962 for six weeks.
The Netherlands reminds me of Florida - lowlands and many canals. We flew. Ma
went again in 1970. Flew also. Dad died February 3, 1965 (77 years old). Ma died
July 31, 1987 (97 years old).
Elmo retired December 7, 1978. Moved to Florida. Spent 8 months, then
spent 4 months at cottage.
The end
Adrianna Jeanette Zwanenburg Martin
Audrey was born January 7, 1919 in Bolsward, The Netherlands, and
came to the USA in August 1921, to Rock Valley, IA. She moved to Colton, SD in
May 1927, to Crooks SD in February, 1937, and to Fairview SD in February 1938.
She was married to Elmo on February 23, 1938, and was married over 57 years when
her heart stopped, and she was pronounced dead on August 12, 1995. Audrey's
Social Security Number was 376-18-5122. She was cremated at Restlawn Memorial
Park, and her remains were interred with her parents at Chapel Hill Memorial
Gardens. She has a plate between her parents. The cause of death was
Idioventricular Cardiac Arrhythmia, which she had fought for 16 years, which was
due to Arterio Sclerosis Cardiovascular Disease.
From Adrianna's letter to Min and Bill Van Noort dated April 2,
1979:
"The Sunshine State of Florida
We love it here - Glad Elmo retired at 62. ...Elmo has done lots to
our Mobile Home - I think he's gone over every inch, inside & out - Painted
roof twice also - enclosed porch - Put Laundry in Utility shed, including 220
line - water & sewer. Sounds like yours is in great shape also - Too bad it
isn't down here in the winter-Elmo & I were so sick of winter, we could
hardly wait to get down here.
We have Club House for dances - cards, Pot lucks, Coffee Katches,
some time services, you name it - Pool tables - Table tennis - Pool outside -
Shuffle board - Horse shoes - & fishing off marina or creek
side.
...I spent 4 days in the Hospital, Feb 13th through 17th -O.K.

In April, 1999, Audrey's son Eugene and his wife Nancy visited the
Colton, SD area where Audrey and her sister Jen grew up and attended Lyons High
School.
Eugene and Nancy met Fannie Reurink Deelstra who said that their
mother, Jennie would take Audrey and Jen to church at First Reformed and Fannie
played with them at Sunday School.
The Sunoco Gas driver, Carl Hinz used to deliver gas to the George
Zwanenburg farm.

Vernon Harmelink arranged to have "Adrianna Zwanenburg Martin" from
the Netherlands inscribed on Panel 620 on The American Immigrant Wall of Honor
at Ellis Island. He also arranged to have her whole family honored: "Janke
Zwanenburg Harmelink, Gooitsen A. and Janke Kuipers Zwanenburg, and Jennie
Zwanenburg Prince."

An Article in a local paper, probably The South Kent News
Mr. and Mrs. George (Jennie) Zwanenburg of 44th S.W., and Mrs. Elmo
Martin of Jefferson S.E., have much to tell their friends about after flying to
the Netherlands and spending about 6 weeks there. They left Grand Rapids on May
13th on a KLM Dutch Airline. 13 hours later they were at their destination. They
spent a month visiting relatives in Friesland, a northern province. Audrey also
visited her birthplace at Bolsward.
Mrs. Zwanenburg visited the Netherlands in 1935 and again in 1955.
Mr. Zwanenburg and Audrey had not been there since 1921.
While they were there they took a bus tour and visited Belguim,
Germany, Luxemburg, spent five nights in Austria, Switzerland and
France.
The trip home took 20 hours because of an hour stop at Ireland and a
2 hour stop at New York City. They returned home on June 25th. Thanks Audrey for
sharing your trip with all of us.

Notes for ELMO LUVERNE MARTIN:
Elmo may have been named after St. Elmo's Fire. Elmo graduated from
Humboldt High School in Humboldt, SD in 1934. He was the Valedictorian. From
October 1934 to July 1935, he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp
Crook, SD. The pay was $20 a month, of which $15 was automatically sent home to
the parents. From October 1936 to July 1937, he was in the CCC Camp at Alvester
SD. He lived in Fairview, SD in February 1938.
Elmo married Adrianna Jeanette Zwanenburg on February 23, 1938, and
they lived with Heit & Mem (Dad & Mom) Zwanenburg in Fairview in the
Spring of 1938. Heit gave them a 1927 Model "T" Ford. Elmo & Audrey worked
on a farm for Pete & Mary Vugteveen for one month, and then they moved in
with Dad and Ma Martin, still in 1938. They worked for one month for the
Rodehans in Humboldt, (Honeymoon time) while on vacation. They went back to
Fairview in the Fall of 1938, and stayed with the Zwanenburgs.
Elmo and Audrey picked corn at the Boesveld farm, and worked for
Harold Groth in Fairview, SD. Audrey moved in at Groth's in December 1938, and
both worked. They won $350 at Bank Night in Rock Valley, IA in August 1939.
About this time, they bought a 1935 Ford V8 in Grand Rapids, MI.
Their old car, the 1927 Model "T" Ford was left behind in George
Zwanenburg's Fairview Garage. George gave it to Elmo's Dad John Martin to make
over into a trailer. John brought his whole family to Fairview to pick it up.
John took his son Linc, and started to drive the Model "T" home toward Humboldt.
Katie, Eunice, Armilda, Kathryn, and Johnnie were following in the family car.
When John crossed the river from Fairview, and got to the top of "Breakneck
Hill", and tried to make a left turn to go North, the wishbone dropped down, and
the front wheels jack-knifed. The car flipped on its side. John's collarbone was
broke. Linc was ok. A farmer asked what John was going to do with the car, and
John said, " You can keep the damn thing."
Elmo and Audrey came to Grand Rapids, MI to visit Audrey's sister Jen
and her husband Gerrit Prince in September 1939, and decided to stay. There were
several rented Board & Room locations in the following months: 1st - one
month will Bill Van Duyn - while folks were on vacation, then Mrs. Meyer on
Chicago Drive, then Mrs. Keestra on Urban Court, then Mrs. Boucher on Sheldon
Ave.
Following this were furnished apartments on Lafayette Ave. and one on
Sheldon Ave. till October 1940.
Lincoln Martin, Elmo's brother, was killed in a hunting accident on
October 3, 1940, and Elmo & Audrey went to SD to the funeral. They returned
to Grand Rapids with a trailer full of their belongings.
Next, they bought a house at 4508 Gardner Ave. S.E. in Paris Township
near Grand Rapids, MI. Later the street name was changed to Jefferson, and the
nearby cross-street, Sunnyside Lane, was changed to 44th Street. Ma & Pa
Zwanenburg moved in for 8 months starting in 1941. Elmo's Folks came in 1941,
and so did Elmo's Dad's sisters Iva and Mina.
Elmo and Audrey took the 1935 V8 on a trip to SD in 1942 (Elmo's
sister Armilda was here). They took peaches with them.
Elmo took a train trip to SD in 1943 - to visit before going into the
Army Air Force. He was sent to Wichita Falls, TX for basic training - October
1943, then to San Antonio - testing - to Ellington Field for Navigation. He
graduated in July 1944 as a 2nd Lt, and stayed as an instructor till December.
Then he went to Langley Field, VA for Radar Observer Training, and on to England
in March 1945. Elmo returned to the USA on July 4, 1945, and on to Long Beach,
CA when the war with Japan ended. He was sent to Boca Raton, FL till December
1945. He did get to come home on leave in October of 1945 when his son, Eugene
Jay Martin, was born.
Elmo & Audrey had no car until December 1946, when they bought a
new 1946 Plymouth. Heit (George Zwanenburg-Audrey's Dad) was burned in a shop
fire in December 1946. The Martin Family, Elmo, Audrey, Eugene and 5 month old
Roger, took a trip to SD in July 1947. Armilda and Katherine, Elmo's sisters,
got married. 1947 was the year Elmo's cousin, Joe Ollerich came to visit in
MI.
The Elmo Martin Family took trips to SD in 1948 and 1949. Bill
Ollerich came to visit in MI in 1949. He was also one of Elmo's cousins. Elmo's
Folks came to MI in 1950 with Armilda (pregnant) and Elmo's Aunt Clara (his
mother's sister). The Elmo Martins went to SD in 1951 with Eugene, Roger, and 5
month old Tom. Audrey went to Breakfast Club in Chicago on the way
home.
Elmo's Dad, John Conrad Martin, died of a heart attack in December
1951, and Elmo went, by train, to the funeral. There was lots of snow in MI.
Audrey taught Eugene how to play Canasta. He was 6 years old.
Elmo's brother John and his wife Pat came to visit in MI in the
winter of 1954. Pat remembers the three little boys, "toe heads", who went
peeking up at the foot of the fold-out davenport they were sleeping on. "Uncle
Johnny is sleeping with a strange woman!", was what she heard from them. She
also remembers George Zwanenburg, Audrey's Dad, and the fast drive on snowy
roads to the cottage on Middle Lake, and another 50 mile drive from there to see
the ice in Lake Michigan. What a whirlwind tour!
With the new 1955 Chevrolet, harvest gold and ivory, the Elmo Martins
went to Utica, NY, then to Quebec to get Audrey's Mom, Jennie Zwanenburg on her
return by ship from her visit to the Netherlands.
In 1956, the Martins took a trip to SD, to the Black Hills, and on to
Denver - Rocky Mts. Nat'l Park and the Royal Gorge. Then, the Martins went to
Tulsa, OK to visit Elmo's sister Eunice, and her husband Claud DeWitt. Johnny
& Pat and Johnny III came also. (Elmo was laid off from Jarecki) In 1956,
the Groth's came to MI.

It was exciting to come across this website. It is so interesting to see one
particular area of a country come together like this! Since my Bouma
ancestors come from Friesland, this site is also very intriguing to me. I am
presently researching my Bouma family tree. My grandfather Sjoerd Hendriks
Bouma (1860) emigrated to America in 1912 from Beetgum (Beetgumermolen) in
Friesland. So far I have found his father Hendirk Tjipkes Bouma (1824) who
was the son of Tjipkes Symens [spelled several ways] Bouma (abt. 1775). They
all lived in the Mendalum/Beetgum/Leeuwarden area. I am looking for
information from anyone on this Bouma family. Also, if anyone has
information on Tjipkes Symens Bouma's parents, grandparents, etc., that would
be wonderful. I would certainly appreciate hearing from anyone who can give
me any information on the genealogy of this particular Bouma family.

Subject: Fetty History
The FETTY family name is a French derivative of the Latin language.
Latin was the language of the educated in France since Roman Times.
Variants of the FETTY name include: Le Fetty, Fety, Fetti, Feti, Feytis, Faitis.
One of the earliest references to the FETTY name or to a variant is a record
of one named Faitis who appeared on the Paris tax roles in 1292.
A De Feytis family in Guyenne was ennobled in 1644.
Jean Le Fetty, son of Guillaume Le Fetty and Marie Houle, was christened 1660

baptized on 21 April 1686 Blenod-Les-Coul in Alsace-Lorraine. The wedding of
Andre Feti and Jeanne Marie Hubeau was celebrated on 2 June 1772 at the Church

Hello everyone,
I signed this guest book back in 1996 and I have learned some much about
my heritage since. I have been in contact with a couple of "long lost"
relatives and I hope to hear from more.
My family is the Heerema family from St. Annaparochie, Het Bildt. They
left in 1881. We've been here in New Jersey ever since. If anyone has
any information on the Heeremas I would love to hear from you.

South Australia.
We live only 100 metres from the beach and as Glenelg is a
beach side suburb, we enjoy nice weather pretty much all year

Our house is a victorian terrace with expensive furnishings,

I would like to liase with the people beforehand, and find out
a bit about them.
So I can feel comfortable
about the whole situation, as I am sure they would feel the same.
I would prefer somewhere close to Amsterdam, within a 20

Preferably Haarlem.but if not thats ok.

Subject: relatives in Friesland
Hello,
This is the second time I've posted on the guestbook.
What a great resource. Thanks to Maarten and all
those who responded with helpful suggestions. Since
my last post I have been very busy tracing my
ancestors. Before my great grandfather died he told
us that he had cousins still living in Friesland.
That was many years ago and we were young. The
thought of having family living on another continent
made us feel so worldly! Since that time, several of
my great aunts/uncles have travelled to Friesland to
mainly explore the area. Some were lucky enough to
find a distant relative or two. Unfortunately, they
have since passed too. I would like to find some of
these relatives again and build up a correspondence.
Our family was mainly from the HetBildt area of St.
AnnaParochie, St.JacobiParochie, and VrouwenParochie.
My branch emigrated to Grand Rapids, MI U.S.A. in
1904. Their surname was deJong which we now spell
DeYoung. Other's that married into the family from
this area are Kuiken, Tulner, Boersma, Wijngaarden,
Bruinsma. If there are still deJongs or others who
feel they may be related, please contact me thru my
email. Some family members are planning on returning
to Friesland soon and we would love to meet our family
that remains there.

Jon DeYoung

Subject: Hello again Maarten Millaard
To trace my Great Grandparents Hoekstra. who
lived in Frisland would the date of immigration be helpful?
Would there be a surname listing of
Dutch immigrating in 1886?
I read that one tenth of all foreign born
Dutch in America lived in Iowa in 1870. In 1870, of 4,513
Dutch who immigrated to
America, 451 were living in Iowa. I deduce that somewhere there must be a
database of the Dutch immigrating to America in 1886.
I have learned from the South Dakota, Clay
County, Meckling 1910 Census that my Grandfather Cornelius Hoekstra immigrated
in 1886, and was naturalized in 1903. He was born in 1881, so I make the
assumption that at age 5 years, he came with his parents, my great Grandparents
Hoekstra to the United States in 1886. His Father was born in Holland, his
Mother was born in Holland. I have also verified his name in the 1920 census of
Hall County, Wood River Village, Nebraska.
I have heard the name
"Burum" to be a place in Frisland, and have not been able to
locate it on a map. Could it be near Workum?
My great grandfather's initials, as I know
them, were T. C. Hoekstra. He married a Katherine Van Dyke, as I have been told.
The names could be otherwise in Dutch spelling. That he brought his son
Cornelius to America in 1886 may be determined, but how.
I am grateful for any ideas and information
which someone may have to offer. Thank you kindly.

Subject: Veenstra from Australia
Signing your guest book from Australia.
My husband's ancestors originated from Friesland which is probably an
unnecessary statement with the name of Veenstra! We are
interested in genealogy and have quite some data on his family mainly
coming from the areas of Peperga, Oldeholtpade, Steggerda and Ter-Idzard
and then in Overijssel at Oldemarkt and Steenwijkerwold.
Would be happy to hear from
anyone with the name Veenstra, or from anyone who lives in those areas as
we are interested in people and life aspects of Friesland.
All the best

Can you recommend a source to contact to gather information we need to
plan our trip to Friesland this coming late April?
We would like information on places to stay, things to see/do & general
information about Friesland. My grandfather came from that area & we
would like to learn more to help make our trip more enjoyable.
Many thanks,

I am enjoying your site. I am recently interested in Friesland. My family
is originally from there and I heard there is even a street named after them?
Any suggestions of how I could see this road on a map? My family's name is
Roorda. Thank you! Tracy Petty

Subject: Koopmans
Dear Maarten,
Greetings from California. I wrote a message last September, and have had
some wonderful help. Several people have given me suggestions, and one
wonderful woman, Minne, has done lots of searching and thinking with me. I
was trying to find the hometown of my grandfather Sam Koopman, who was born
in 1877 and came to the US in 1882.
Thanks to Minne, I now know that his name was actually Sijtse Koopmans born
Feb. 22, 1877 in Franeker, and his parents were Johannes Willems Koopmans
born Oct. 11, 1832 in Oosterlittens and Antje Willems Visser born 1831 or
1832 in Jorwerd.
I have also learned that he had several older brothers and sisters. Does
anyone have any information about these other children born to Johannes and
Antje? Some of them may have stayed in Friesland when the family came to the
US.
Many thanks, Elizabeth Herb

I was an employee of the Holland America Cruise

I am trying to find him. His name is Johannes Bakker and at that time he
lived on Valeriusstraat in Leeuwarden.
Any information would be appreciated.
