Date December 30, 1995. My name is Jacob Vandenberg from
102535.1263@compuserve.com. I have lived in London, Ontario,
Canada since I arrived here with my parents from Drachten, Friesland, in 1950.
Although I do not remember much from that time as I was only 13 years old at
the time. What I do remember is that we lived at Vogelsang 62, Drachten, Fr.
My father was a vegetable gardener right accross from where we lived. His
name was Feitze van den Berg, He also had a brother named Gerard.
I dont' know if anyone woud still remember any one or not but I would be
glad to hear from anyone that does.
PS both my father and uncle are now deceased.

Dokkum, Franeker of Drachten.
We
wonen nu 5 jaar in Hong Kong. Heel leuk om zoveel Internationale Friezen in
jullie gastenboek tegen te komen!

Mijn moeder is Friezin, haar naam is Ymkje Postma, ze is geboren in 1915 te
Irnsum.

Several days ago, I was browsing through a reference book, and noticed
that the Frisian language was supposed to be the closest living language
to English. That got me curious, and I began searching the Internet
to find what I could about Frisian. The search engines seemed fixated
on cows, and it took quite a while to find my way here.
It's a very friendly, informative, and well arranged website. But I'm
still curious to see a little written Frisian. I would imagine it's
about as dissimilar to modern English as Anglo-Saxon is, but I'm still
curious. I noticed that it is listed as an "endangered language," at one web-site.

Dear Maarten Millaard,
My great grandmother apparently came to the Holland, Michigan, United States
area sometime between 1860 and 1880 from Lemmer (spelling?) and her husband
from somewhere in Frisland at approximately the same time.
Their names were Maartin Jaarsma and Okje Haven, respectively.
At approximately the same time a Frank Wierda and a Jane Veurink (each estimated to be
born circa 1870) were married and came to the United States from Frisland.
My brother and I, having e-mail addresses, would like to know if there is
any geneological data that might link us to the 3rd or 4th generation that still lives in Holland.
Any suggestions. (There are very few of either names in the United States).
Christopher John and Gerrit Lee Wierda; sons of Gerrit John Wierda Jr.; son
of Gerrit Wierda, Sr. and Tena Jaarsma Wierda.

Hello, I'm not Frisch. But I guess "Anglos" are Frisch or at least cousins if you go back far enough.
I have studied Old English. I have been very curious about your idiom simply because it is English'
closest cousin or perhaps a sister. Anyway, if you ever\wondered if anyone of the English-speaking
persuasion was even intersted, I am more than interested. I am currently studying Spanish and nearly
fluent. I may be teaching English-as-a-Second-Language students and wonder if a knowledge of Frisch
would be helpful in explaining certain English structures. Besides that, I welcome any contact from
Friesland, scholarly or otherwise.

Sinds kort heb ik Internet ontdekt. Natuurlijk ga je dan na korte tijd
zoeken naar informatie uit je eigen omgeving. Al zoekende kwam ik terecht op de
Friesland pagina.

Hi there,
Although I was born in Amsterdam, my anchestors were allegedly Frisians that
settled a couple of hundred years ago in Noord Holland (around Den Helder)
where they were involved in, among other things, whaling.
While still living in Holland, I have spent many holidays in your beautiful
province.
My wife Ingrid, our son Elco and I moved to British Columbia, Canada, about
16 years ago.
After spendin about 15 years in the Vancouver area, we now live in Peachland
in the middle of the Okanagan Region's beautiful wine country.
Recently, we started digging into the genealogy of the Gauws.
Hence, I'm interested in the history of Gauw, a village between Gooijenga
and Sijbrandebuuren. If you know of any person or other resource I could
contact, please email me. I would appreciate it very much.
Now in Dutch, which I never write anymore, and only speak when people from
Holland visit us.
By voorbaat bedankt!
Vriendelijke groeten,

I am also interested in finding information about my ansestors from Friesland,

Dear Friesians,
I have been interested in Frysk since reading Mario Pei book THE STORY OF ENGLISH
back in high school in the late 1950's and remembered more or less the shibboleth he quotes as
- "Brot, butter en grene chiese
- En wat dat net sayse ken
- Is kin uprjuchte Friese"
I learned German and even had contact with so called East Friesians who taught me some
Plattdeutsch in particular Dat Friesenleed: Wo de nortsee wellen trekken an den strand....
I did a Ph D in linguistics working on Melanesian languages.
Most recently I met a doctor here in Honolulu who grew up in Friesland.
He has offered his help in learning more of the real Friesian language but I
lack materials. I have ordered a Friesian-English dictionary. I would like
to buy a copy of Tiersma's reference grammar. Most useful to me at this point
would be a phrase book.
I have seen Henry J Baron's posting to the DRF Guestbook.
I will contact him directly. Any other leads would be appreciated.
Replies in Frysk, Hollands, Platt or even English would be welcome.
Another of my interests is in genealogy.
Thru my great grandmother Helen Roosevelt [third cousin to Teddy the president]
we are descended from Olfert Sioerts (c1661-c1710) and his father
Siort Ofertsen (?-1702) who both came from Heerenveen, or It Hearrenfean
and both died in New York. Can I claim Friesian ancestry thru them? I hope so.
me ke aloha,

It's delightful to find this piece of Frisian cyberspace and especially
this guest list. Though scattered across the globe, we can feel
connected through the electronic media.
I teach English (and occasionally Frisian) at Calvin College in Grand
Rapids, MI. I review Frisian literature regularly for WORLD LITERATURE
TODAY, have translated a Frisian novel into English, and am working on a
book for those interested in learning the rudiments of the Frisian
language and something of Friesland's history and culture. I usually get
back to Frisian soil once every three years or so.
In Grand Rapids we still have an annual Frisian church service; the 40th
successive one is coming up next May. We also meet together as a group
of Frisian natives or descendants regularly over lunch. We hang the
Frisian flag of course when we do. May the guest list grow!

Hi
My mother is Fries and has been living in Canada for 43 years. I have only a smattering of Fries
myself, and would like to learn more. Can you tell me where I could find information in English
on how to learn the language? As well, my mother spoke the language only at home, and was
educated in Dutch. Consequently, there are a number of word and phrases with which she is
not familiar. (This comes out when she read her Frisian Bible -- an item I found in a religious
bookstore here in Ottawa.
As well, there is one particular request that perhaps you or a contact of your could help me with:
I have in vain tried to find someone -- including relatives in Friesland -- who knows what the
Frisian names are for the 12 months of the year. If you have such a list, could you please forward
